Fans of the beloved platforming series were hit with disappointing news as it was revealed that Crash Bandicoot 5 was reportedly canceled. According to a former developer, this cancellation is bound to cause heartache among the series' ardent followers.
Character artist Nicholas Kole, who was previously involved in the project, shared on Twitter that the game, referred to as 'Project Dragon,' had been abruptly halted after spending over three years in development. This revelation led to concerns among Spyro fans about the future of their favorite dragon, fears which Kole promptly dispelled.
Amid the speculation, Kole mentioned that Crash Bandicoot 5 was indeed in the pipeline at some point. He stated that once details of this project come to light, fans of the iconic platformer series will be left heartbroken. However, Kole refrained from providing further specifics about the now-canceled game, likely due to a non-disclosure agreement.
There was no official confirmation whether the project was under development at the studio responsible for the previous entry, Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time, known as Toys For Bob. However, considering the studio's recent involvement in the series, it seems plausible. Toys For Bob recently went independent following its separation from Activision Blizzard. While 86 developers were laid off amid reports of a potential studio closure, the studio remains operational and is currently collaborating with Xbox on its next game.
This upcoming project remains shrouded in mystery, and it's important to note that Activision likely retains the rights to both the Crash and Spyro franchises, rather than the newly-independent Toys For Bob.
