Star Wars: The Old Republic is making a major change to its servers, migrating them to the cloud by using Amazon Web Services (AWS). This change is part of The Old Republic's ongoing effort to upgrade and modernize the game for its second decade of service. In order to test their new cloud host, The Old Republic is launching a server fully hosted on the AWS cloud and incentivizing players to test it with an exclusive reward.
This switch to the cloud is beneficial for both players and developers, as it will improve player performance and connectivity, as well as allow for more efficient backend maintenance. Furthermore, the use of AWS could create the opportunity for The Old Republic to offer gameplay in regions that were previously unable to play.
Players can now test The Old Republic’s AWS cloud server on their temporary Shae Vizla server from April 3rd through April 18th. During this time, The Old Republic will be primarily looking for outcomes related to performance, visuals, connectivity, and functionality. Those who log in and complete a match in each of the three game modes available will be rewarded with the highly-coveted Opal Vulptilla mount.
The Old Republic is not just making changes to its servers, however. Their most recent patch switched the client to 64-bit, bringing the game up to a more modern level. With this, the game is expected to both look and perform better than before. As the game is now over a decade old, these sorts of technical updates are necessary to keep the game competitive in the current market.
In conclusion, Star Wars: The Old Republic’s upcoming server migration to the cloud is a much-needed improvement and is part of the game's ongoing efforts to remain competitive. As The Old Republic looks to its future, players will be eager to see what other sorts of updates and changes BioWare can introduce.
